Using Lernoa with ChatGPT and other AI assistants

Last updated: July 23, 2026

Lernoa runs a remote server at api.lernoa.com/mcp that speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Any AI assistant that supports MCP, including ChatGPT, Claude, and others, can connect to it once you explicitly link your Lernoa account. This page explains exactly what that connection can and cannot do, using ChatGPT as the running example, since the behaviour is the same for every MCP-compatible assistant.

What the plugin does

Once connected, an AI assistant can work with your own Lernoa content on your behalf, in plain language:

  • Decks and cards: list, view, create, edit, reorder, delete and export your flashcard decks and cards.
  • Subjects: list, create, edit and delete the subjects you use to organise decks.
  • Courses and chapters: list and view your AI courses and their chapter outlines, create and edit courses and chapters, reorder chapters, import a course from Markdown, and export a course.
  • Course notes: add, edit and delete your private notes on a course.
  • Materials: list, view, upload, edit and delete the documents in your learning library.
  • Study settings: read and update preferences such as your audio-narration voice, and read your study statistics and AI credit balance.
  • Search: search across your own decks, courses, materials and subjects to find something quickly.

When you ask it to, the assistant can also generate new content with AI: a flashcard deck, cards from a material you uploaded, or a full course. This uses the same AI generation as the Lernoa app itself.

What the plugin does not do

  • It cannot buy or sell anything. There is no purchase, checkout or subscription tool, and it never sees payment-card details. Credit packs are bought only on the Lernoa website or app.
  • It cannot change your password, email address or any other account or profile setting.
  • It cannot delete your Lernoa account.
  • It cannot record a spaced-repetition review result, submit quiz or exam answers, or otherwise change your review schedule or study progress. Those actions stay inside the Lernoa app so your review history stays accurate.
  • It cannot see or act on any other Lernoa user's data.
  • It cannot reach any Lernoa admin function.
  • It does not receive your full conversation history with ChatGPT or any other assistant. It only sees the specific inputs the assistant sends when it calls one of its tools.

Data ChatGPT can request

Depending on what you ask it to do, an AI assistant can request these categories of data from your Lernoa account, and nothing else:

  • Decks and cards
  • Subjects
  • Courses and chapters (quiz questions only, never the answers)
  • Course notes
  • Materials you have uploaded
  • Study settings and narration voice preferences
  • Your AI credit balance and study statistics
  • Search results across the categories above

Every request is scoped to the single Lernoa account you connected, and only returns data that is relevant to what was asked in the moment. It does not return internal identifiers, security logs, or data belonging to any other account.

Actions that can change your account

Tools fall into three groups:

  • Read-only: listing or viewing decks, cards, subjects, courses, chapters, notes, materials, quizzes, search results, study settings, study statistics and credit balance. These never change anything.
  • Write: creating, editing, reordering, uploading or exporting decks, cards, subjects, courses, chapters, notes, materials and study settings. These change your account, but only add or update content, and everything they touch is a normal Lernoa item you can review or edit afterwards in the app.
  • Destructive: deleting a deck, card, chapter, course, course note, material, subject or card image. These permanently remove the item. There is no separate undo beyond re-creating it.

AI generation spends credits. Generating a deck, generating cards from a material, or generating a course all spend AI credits already in your Lernoa account, exactly as they would if you generated them in the app. The plugin cannot buy more credits, and a generation request fails if your balance is not enough, the same way it would in the app.

Connecting your account

From within ChatGPT, Claude, or another MCP-capable assistant, you choose to connect to Lernoa at api.lernoa.com/mcp. The connection uses OAuth:

  1. The assistant sends you to sign in to Lernoa if you are not already signed in.
  2. Lernoa shows you a consent screen naming the assistant, what it can do, and a clear list of what it can never do (payments, purchases, passwords, email, and your account).
  3. Only after you approve does Lernoa create a private connection for that assistant.

You can review and revoke this consent at any time, and you can hold connections to more than one assistant at once.

Disconnecting your account

You can disconnect an AI assistant from either side:

  • In Lernoa: sign in to the app and go to Settings, then "Connected AI apps". It lists every assistant connected to your account, when it connected, and when it was last used. Select Disconnect next to the one you want to remove.
  • In the AI assistant: most assistants, including ChatGPT, have their own connected-apps or integrations settings where you can remove Lernoa directly.

Either method immediately revokes that assistant's access. Disconnecting an assistant does not delete your Lernoa account or any of your content; it only ends that assistant's access to it.

Deleting plugin-related data

Anything an assistant creates through the connection, such as a deck, a course or a note, becomes an ordinary item in your Lernoa account. You can view, edit or delete it in the app at any time, the same as anything you created yourself.

The record of the connection itself (which assistant, when it connected, when it was last used) is deleted the moment you disconnect it. Deleting your whole Lernoa account, from Settings, also removes all of your decks, courses, materials and connection history, including anything an AI assistant created.

Security and privacy

Do not submit passwords, API keys, authentication codes, payment-card details, government identifiers, or protected health information through this integration.

Access is authenticated with OAuth and short-lived tokens; a connection can be revoked at any time as described above. See our Privacy Policy, including the section on ChatGPT and AI assistant integrations, for how data reaches and moves through this connection.

To report a security or privacy concern, contact support@lernoa.com or see /.well-known/security.txt.

Limitations

  • AI-generated decks and courses are drafts. They can contain errors, and you can edit anything before or after you study it.
  • Lernoa is a study tool, not an accredited exam or certification provider. It cannot complete a live or controlled assessment on your behalf, and any progress shown is not an official grade.
  • Only import or create content you are authorised to use. The integration must not be used to reproduce large passages of copyrighted material without permission.
  • The assistant only ever acts within the single Lernoa account you connected it to.
